Bridging the Generations: Local Students and Retirees Unite to Restore Benches—and Community Spirit
It was a day when paintbrushes did as much talking as the people holding them. Students from Sir William Ramsay School recently spent a heartwarming day at Hughenden Garden Retirement Village, proving that community spirit knows no age limit.
The initiative saw the local students trade their textbooks for tools as they spent the day cleaning, sanding, repairing, and repainting the wooden benches scattered throughout the retirement village’s grounds. The goal was to spruce up the outdoor seating areas just in time for the warmer weather, but the day quickly evolved into something much more meaningful.

As the students worked, several of the village residents joined in to lend a hand. Alongside the teenagers, the retirees grabbed paintbrushes and joined the restoration effort. What started as a simple DIY project transformed into a vibrant intergenerational exchange.
Hughenden Garden Village resident: “It's a brilliant initiative with these students coming down to support us in achieving this project together. We're going to put some benches out on the path, so when people are struggling back with their shopping, they can have a rest on the way back. It’s a valuable project practically, and it's just great socially to work with these students."
To commemorate the special bond formed during the event, Hughenden Garden Retirement Village announced a surprise gesture of their own. The village will be donating two of the newly refurbished benches back to Sir William Ramsay School. The benches will be installed on the school grounds, serving as a permanent reminder to the students of the friendships they built and the impact of giving back to their local community.
