Year 7s Tackle New Challenges with Aylesbury Rugby Club Partnership
Over the past eight weeks, students across the Insignis Academy Trust (IAT) have experienced the thrill of rugby thanks to a fantastic collaborative project with Aylesbury Rugby Club (ARFC). Year 7 students from our schools have travelled to the club's Weston Turville grounds for an engaging introduction to the sport, fostering not only rugby skills but also valuable social and personal development.
The initiative aimed to bridge the gap for students who may not have had prior exposure to contact rugby, offering them a unique opportunity to connect with their local community rugby club. Working alongside dedicated community coaches (ARFC volunteers) and Next Phase Academy, our schools have ensured high levels of participation, enjoyment, and skill progression.
Crucially, this programme has been inclusive, welcoming both boys and girls. Students have been coached at a pace that suits their individual needs, allowing them to build confidence and proficiency in a supportive environment.
This week marked a significant milestone as our first combined IAT team took to the field for a friendly match against John Hampden Grammar School. For many, it was their first taste of a contact rugby match, providing a platform to showcase the skills, confidence, and enthusiasm they've cultivated throughout the programme. This match was a large step towards the 'Long win' of ensuring our students have the opportunity to take part in regular physical activity.
A heartfelt thank you goes to the driving forces behind this success: Luke and Steve (ARFC coaches), Paul Andrews (Chairman of Youth Rugby at ARFC), Tom and James (Next Phase Academy coaches), the dedicated IAT staff who generously gave their time, and, of course, the students themselves, whose infectious energy and commitment have been truly inspiring.
Looking Ahead: Summer Touch Rugby and Expanded Programme
Building on this success, we are excited to announce the extension of this project into mixed Summer Touch Rugby. Furthermore, we have secured the All-Weather Pitch (AGP) at ARFC for every Wednesday afternoon from September. This will allow us to commence the programme earlier and expand its reach to Year 7 and 8 boys, as well as Year 7-9 girls.
We are immensely proud of the impact this project has had, enabling over 30 Year 7 students from across IAT to truly "Collaborate to Succeed". We look forward to seeing this partnership continue to flourish and empower our students in the years to come.
